Lighter than any other?
Thursday, 19 June, 2008
TenCate Advanced Armour (Stand E075c) has launched its latest lightweight composite armour at Eurosatory, which it claims is considerably lighter than others of this type being offered on the world market. Development is complete and production can start as soon as orders are received.
Weighing less than 40kg/m2, the new armour has been designed to withstand 7.62mm armour piercing attack (STANAG 4569 Level 2), but can easily be adapted to meet other threats.
In addition to being used in the appliqué armour application on existing vehicles to enhance their overall survivability, it can also be used to replace existing subsystems such as doors, hatches and ramps.
When used as appliqué armour, it is claimed that the new armour will provide enhanced protection against more complex threats such as explosively formed projectiles and improvised explosive devices, while also considerably reducing the weight of the vehicle.
The company already supplies armour systems for a wide range of air, sea and land applications and has supplied appliqué composite armour systems for MOWAG Piranha III (8x8) armoured personnel carriers deployed by Denmark.
