First public outing for GP-F2T prototype
Thursday, 19 June, 2008
The prototype of a new family of Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) wheeled modular scalable tactical vehicles has been undergoing company trials since last year. this is being shown in public for the first time at euro satory (outdoor stand C160) to appraise potential customers of the capability of the vehicle.
The generic platform is called Future Fennek Technology (GP-F2T) and is a further development of the Fennek (4x4) reconnaissance vehicles currently in production and deployed by Germany and the Netherlands in Afghanistan. According to KMW, the vehicle will offer customers an unprecedented combination of not only the latest propulsion technology but also state-of-the-art protection.
All vehicles will feature two 150kW diesel engines installed one at either end of the vehicle, which will give a maximum road speed of at least 100km/h. The vehicle can be driven using both engines or just one engine.
The well-protected crew compartment is in the centre of the vehicle. The first example has three people at the front and two at the rear, with a high level of situational awareness.
A high level of ballistic protection will be provided against a wide range of battlefield threats including mines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and rocket-propelled grenades. Depending on the user requirements, the family of vehicles will have a combat weight of between 7.5 and 24 tonnes – the latter being a 6x6 model. A variety of weapon stations can be fitted on the roof; the latest KMW FLW 200 weapon station armed with a 40mm automatic grenade launcher is displayed at Eurosatory.
