Samson clears the wayNot all the demining machines promoted here are in use by armed forces or the United Nations; the Samson 300 featured by Vilpo on Stand C150g is mainly employed by commercial companies under contract to governments. For example, two are used by a US company in Afghanistan, while in Sudan two machines support the activities of an oil company, by making safe substantial areas of terrain.

Interrogation from a safe distanceAn improvised explosive device (IE D) interrogation arm produced by Fascan International makes use of a Micro 20 crane produced by FASSI , which is exhibiting its range on Outdoor Stand H010. Notable for their compact size, the FASSI articulated cranes have a maximum reach of 9.4m when functioning as an interrogation arm and they have become a key element in combating IEDs in Iraq.

Get more from the GatlingDillon Aero has given new life to the Gatling minigun concept, and visitors to Stand Q210c will be aware that the company has stimulated market interest in many applications. The company originally focused attention on the development of helicopter mounts for its M134D Minigun, although there are considerable interesting vehicle and vessel mounts for the gun.

Mini MineWolf passes German testThe German Army’s Technical Centre for Weapons and Ammunition based in Meppen, Germany, has published its final results of trials with the 8.1 metric ton remote-controlled Mini MineWolf against simulated Anti Personnel (AP) and live Anti-tank (AT) mines with explosive yield up to 13.5kg TNT.

The latest product is the Blue Magpie mini-UAV , a simple-to-operate electric-powered vehicle.

Bozena 5 clears lethal threatsThe Bozena 5 midi mine clearance system that dominates the Way Industry stand (N210a) is the latest development from a company that has established leadership in this field. Way initially became involved in the technology in response to demands from the former Yugoslavia.
Way produced the Bozena 4 mini system, which has been under continuous development in Slovakia since the early 1990s. Radio-controlled from a distance of 2,000m, the Bozena 4 employs a flail system but can become a multipurpose vehicle when fitted with a dozer or other attachment.

Piranha V ready to roll in 2009MOWAG’s Piranha V has been selected by the UK MoD as the provisionally preferred bidder for the British Army’s Future Rapid Effect System (FRES ) Utility Vehicle (UV) requirement.
Prime contractor General Dynamics UK is in discussions with the UK MoD regarding this contract, but unless a firm development and follow-on production schedule is soon firmed up, it will be difficult for the in-service date of 2012 to be met.
