Realistic training

Brian M Walters

Simulation can be an invaluable aid but the need to use real ammunition with real weapons is recognised by Nammo, which features a range of training ammunition on Stand J070a. It claims to have been the first to introduce plastic training ammunition, now in use worldwide and today available in all calibres from 4.6mm to 40mm, permitting realistic force-on-force exercises.
Nammo has developed new and cost-effective ammunition for the ubiquitous 12.7mm (.50 cal) heavy machine gun, still in operational use worldwide. But in addition to improved armour piercing rounds, Nammo has developed plastic short-range training ammunition for target practice in range-restricted areas. This has a ballistic match to standard ammunition to about 150m and with a maximum range of 500m.
Produced under licence from Nexter, Nammo offers a 120mm training round for main battle tanks, matching the existing ballistic in Leopard 2, M1 Abrams and most other MBTs with smoothbore guns.
For the M72 intended to attack AFVs, Nammo has produced a subcalibre trainer that has a launcher the same as for the live round. This lowcost trainer is easy to operate.
