Further FMTVs destined for Jordan
Further FMTVs destined for JordanBAE Systems (Stand S195g) has been awarded a USD 6m contract for a foreign military sale of Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV) destined for Jordan.
This is the third order for Jordan in the past four years, bringing the total value to more than USD16m. Work on the contract will be performed in Sealy, Texas, and managed by the US Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM). The work is expected to be complete by October 2008.

Lasers for area defenceRaytheon is forging ahead with a demonstration programme to show that a laser can equal or better the performance of traditional gun-based systems, with greater development potential and at reduced cost. The company’s Laser Area Defense System (LA DS) utilises the Phalanx platform, combined with current solid-state laser capability to tackle the very real threat of mortars and Katyusha rockets.

In addition to showing the Med-Eng EOD9 EOD/IE DD suit (see photo) and helmet ensemble, one of the main focuses is unique new software for the Defender and Vanguard ROVs.

Protection without compromiseAvon Protection Systems is showcasing its new ST53 multi-role modular Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) on Stand S055a. Described as a “groundbreaking system”, the ST 53 has been designed to enable the operator to enter a hot-zone using SCBA (positive pressure) and switch to filter mode (negative pressure) allowing extended protection once the atmosphere has become less toxic.

Sofradir introduces lightweight IR detector
Responding to calls for increasingly compact equipment, Sofradir has launched the Epsilon, a half-TV format (384x288), 15-micron infrared detector that is roughly half the size and weight of existing systems. Epsilon is aimed at a number of applications, including hand-held systems, night-vision goggles and small UAV s. The new detector is being showcased here on the company’s stand (D115c).

Latest helo handling system ordered
On Stand D075a, Curtiss-Wright Controls is celebrating the award of a multimillion dollar contract from Fincantieri for the Italian Navy FREMM frigates. The contract calls for the supply of TC-ASIST helicopter handling systems for the first two ships of the new frigate class and includes options for the planned eight remaining ships. TC-ASIST is a variant of the well-established ASIST system that allows integration of the operating concept without structural modifications to the existing Italian helo fleet. Similar systems are fitted to the Italian Horizon class frigates to provide an enhanced operating capability with both AW101 and NH90 helicopters.
