Thales, Kongsberg team on Protector

Thursday, 13 September, 2007

Thales UK and Norway’s Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace have signed a teaming agreement enabling Thales to address the UK remote weapons station market through the licensed manufacture of Kongsberg’s Protector remote weapon station.

The two companies say the teaming “will be focusing on the UK armoured fighting vehicle programmes that require [remote weapon station] solutions capable of being integrated into existing or proposed electronic architectures”.

Manufacture of Protector systems for UK applications would be undertaken at Thales Optronics’ facility in Glasgow. Thales and Kongsberg add that they are pursuing “other potential extensions of the agreement”.

More than 2,000 Protector systems have been delivered to date to seven customers, including the US Army’s Stryker vehicle programme.

Last month, Kongsberg was awarded a USD1 billion, five-year framework contract for deliveries of a variant of the Protector remote weapon station to the US Army under the CROWS (Common Remotely Operated Weapon Station) programme.
