New aids to defeat bio-warfare
Thursday, 13 September, 2007
Smiths Detection is a name synonymous with combating chemical warfare and has grown to encompass detection of other invisible but lethal agents, such as biological agents.
However, the dividing line between these kinds of threats in military environments and terrorist activity has become blurred, so that Smiths’ products shown on Stand 355 are as familiar at airports, or on the approaches to and within the ExCeL building, as they are in the hands of soldiers. The company is introducing developments at the show, including the Smart BioSensor (SBS) displayed in prototype form.
The SBS draws on experience with the GID series and enables realtime detection of biological agents in ambient air. It classifies bacteria, bacterial spores, toxins and viruses that maintain a low response to common biological and chemical interferents in the environment. A potential application of SBS is its inclusion with other sensors in a sealed vehicle that could probe areas suspected of contamination. The Bio-Seeq Plus is another revision derived from earlier models but is said to be more user-friendly and has improved capability for the identification of biological warfare agents. It features a membrane keyboard with extra large keys for use by those wearing protective gloves.
