Enhanced combat survivability for AMV

Finnish company Patria Vehicles (Stand 1125) has teamed with German company IBD Deisenroth Engineering to enhance the combat survivability of the Armoured Modular Vehicle (AMV).

Being shown at DSEi for the first time is the latest Patria Vehicles Armoured Modular Vehicle E3 company demonstrator that has been fitted with the IBD Active Defence System (ADS). This is a hard kill ADS that provides coverage through a full 360° against a variety of battlefield threats including kinetic energy, shape charge (including the RPG-7) and improvised explosive devices.

For this application, the complete ADS weighs about 400kg and externally consists of sensors and countermeasures integrated in modular boxes. The central processing unit and the man-machine interface are located inside the vehicle. Threat weapons are neutralised when they are a very short distance from the platform.

According to IBD, its ADS has been fully developed and is now being qualified. It was successfully tested on an IVECO Defence Vehicles Division Light Multi-role Vehicle (LMV) earlier this year when it neutralised incoming RPG-7 anti-tank weapons. This is the first time that the ADS has been integrated onto an 8x8 vehicle and it could be fielded within two years. ADS is one member of the IBD Advanced Modular Armour Protection (AMAP) family.

Patria Vehicles is also showing an AMV fitted with the Patria Weapon Systems 120mm NEMO smoothbore mortar system, ordered by Slovenia. The remotecontrolled 120mm NEMO mortar system weighs about 1.5 tonnes, which allows it to be integrated onto a wide range of tracked and wheeled chassis. A naval version of the 120mm NEMO is also being studied under a contract awarded to Patria Weapon Systems by the Finnish Defence Force earlier this year.

Although launched only a few years ago, the AMV has already won a number of major international competitions and has so far been ordered by Croatia (84), Finland (24 with 120mm AMOS and 62 APCs), Poland (690), Slovenia (135) and South Africa (264).
