Talisman M starts sea trials
Wednesday, 12 September, 2007
BAE Systems Underwater Systems has commenced in-water trials of its second generation Talisman M unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV). Designed specifically for mine countermeasures (MCM) operations, the Talisman M vehicle undertook first sea trials in August at the Royal Navy’s defence diving school at Hornsea Island, Portsmouth.
According to BAE Systems, these initial tests marked a key milestone in the Talisman M development programme, enabling the company’s Maritime Autonomy Group to test and trial the integration of the various payloads. This was achieved just seven months after the programme was launched, reflecting the rapid prototyping ethos adopted by the company in its UUV development programme.
Part of the trials included achieving a remote launch of the Archerfish mine disposal system — the system chosen by the US Navy as its Common Neutraliser. This was successfully achieved on several occasions, demonstrating the effective integration of the two vehicles. Development trials continue, with the aim of conducting a series of customer demonstrations in the US before the end of 2007. This will be in conjunction with BAE Systems Land and Armaments, teaming partner for the promotion of the Talisman UUV into the US market.
