Oshkosh bids for UK FLET
Wednesday, 12 September, 2007
Oshkosh Truck Corporation (Stand 1037) is showing its entry for the British Army requirement for an initial purchase of 110 Future Light Equipment Transporter (FLET) tractor trucks that will replace current in-service vehicles that are becoming difficult to maintain.
Its entry for FLET is based on the success of the Wheeled Tanker Programme for the British Army, which has been completed on time and on budget with a total of 357 units supplied. It is expected that the invitation to tender will be issued later this year to the two contenders, MAN ERF and Oshkosh, with an order to be placed in 2008. Projected in-service date is 2010/2011; the requirement being for a 6x6 tractor truck only, with the existing semitrailers being used. Oshkosh FLET is essentially the same as the tractor truck used for the Wheeled Tank Programme, with production vehicles having a lower fifth wheel and smaller diameter tyres. The tractor truck used in the Wheeled Tanker Programme is based on the US Marine Corps Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement series of vehicles, of which large numbers have been supplied, with production still underway. FLET will be used to tow semi-trailers carrying armoured vehicles, trucks and other equipment with a gross trailer weight of up to 71 tonnes.
