British Army deploys APFB
British Army deploys APFBWFEL (Stand 198) has completed initial deliveries of its new Air Portable Ferry Bridge (APFB) to the British Army and this has now been deployed on operations to Afghanistan. APFB is the replacement for the very old Class 16 air-portable bridge used by the British Army. Export marketing of the APFB is already underway and as it is designed for use by rapid deployment forces, WFEL sees a significant export market for this system on a worldwide basis.

Thales to supply fuzes for US missiles
UK-based Thales Missile Electronics has been awarded a GBP21.7m contract by Raytheon Missile Systems of the US to supply more than 5,000 target detection devices (TDD) for the TOW 2B anti-tank guided weapon (ATGW). Production will be undertaken at Thales Missile Electronics’ facility in Basingstoke from later this year, running through 2009. Since 1989 the company has produced more than 47,000 TDD for
the TOW ATGW.

Lobo Systems seeks access
Lobo Systems seeks accessLord Drayson, Minister of State for Defence Equipment and Support, visited Lobo Systems (Stand 2120) at a recent seminar, to familiarise himself with the company’s successful access system for maintenance. “Despite our sales overseas, we have yet to secure our first order from the UK Ministry of Defence and I hope that my discussion with Lord Drayson will help reverse this position,” commented Robert Bokros, managing director of Lobo Systems.

BAE upgrades Glascoed plant
BAE Systems Land Systems Munitions has invested some GBP750,000 in its Glascoed munitions facility in Wales with the introduction of a worldleading X-ray imaging process that can detect air pockets as small as 1mm in diameter within explosives. Further work is planned to enhance the system to produce images showing pockets smaller than 1mm. Air pockets in munitions can affect accuracy, and in severe cases, could lead to premature detonation.
