Terrorism Trends
Seminar BackgroundThis seminar will review year-to-date global terrorism and insurgency trends, based upon events recorded by Jane’s Terrorism & Insurgency Centre (JTIC) in its terrorism database. The presentation, delivered by JTIC analysts, will be in three parts:
- Global Trends: The first section will provide an overview of trends in sub-state violence at the global level during the first two quarters of 2009. In addition, the talk will highlight a number of noteworthy developments in individual countries over the period.
- Country Focus: In the light of increasingly high-profile piracy incidents off the coast of Somalia, the second section will provide an assessment of the evolving situation on the ground within the country itself. The talk will provide a breakdown of the emerging and established militant groups operating within the country’s ungoverned space, and the key players vying for power and control.
- Tactical focus: The final section will examine trends in terrorism tactics – specifically, global patterns in the use of suicide tactics. The talk will highlight the extent to which recent suicide operations around the world contradict some of the established theories used to explain the phenomenon of suicide operations.
The presentation will include a comprehensive question and answer session during which you will be able to explore and discuss the topic with Jane's analysts in greater detail.
