Iran Country Briefing: Implications of the 2009 Iranian presidential elections
Seminar BackgroundThe 2009 presidential elections in Iran will be keenly watched in the West. There is speculation that the results of the ongoing US policy review toward the Middle Eastern state will not be revealed until the identity of the next Iranian president is clear. What is almost certain, however, is that the incumbent president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is being challenged from both the ranks of reformists but also hardliners among far right Islamists. Meanwhile, there is also a debate about the utility of a “national unity government” given the external pressures Tehran is facing. In this seminar, Jane’s will assess the candidates, the issues and potential consequences of the election result.
On the domestic front, two main issues will be at the centre stage in the election debate: the economy and social reform. These are the two issues that appear as most significant to the estimated 46 million eligible voters and likely where Ahmadinejad’s policies will be most rigorously challenged in the election process.
