The Impact of US drawdown on Iraq security

In March 2003 a US-led coalition invaded Iraq and overthrew Saddam Hussein's regime. The coalition subsequently assumed responsibility for administering Iraq, promising that the country would be transformed into a democracy. Sovereignty was restored to the Iraqi Interim Government when the occupation formally ended on 28 June 2004. However, the hope that this would restore stability was not realised and a bloody insurgency developed. (more)
Maritime Piracy

The recent surge of pirate attacks off the Horn of Africa has focused greater international attention on the perennial problem of maritime piracy. According to International Maritime Bureau figures, 293 incidents were recorded around the world in 2008, roughly 38 per cent of which were attributed to Somali gangs operating in the wider vicinity of the Gulf of Aden, Red Sea and Western Indian Ocean.(more)

There is speculation that the results of the ongoing US policy review toward the Middle Eastern state will not be revealed until the identity of the next Iranian president is clear. What is almost certain, however, is that the incumbent president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is being challenged from both the ranks of reformists but also hardliners among far right Islamists.
