The US Navy (USN) is seeking information from industry regarding an F/A-XX carrier-based strike fighter to potentially replace its F/A-18E/F Super Hornet tactical fighter and EA-18G Growler electronic attack aircraft.
Officials hope to see an initial operational capability for an F/A-XX aircraft in 2030 so they can begin replacing the Super Hornets once those airframes reach about 9,000 hours, Rear Admiral Donald Gaddis, programme executive officer for tactical aviation, said during a 16 April briefing at the Navy League's annual conference in Maryland.
In a quietly released request for information (RfI) notice published on 13 April, the USN explained that its Director for Air Warfare had requested that Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) should conduct "trade space refinement as a precursor to an analysis of alternatives for candidate strike fighter aircraft replacements" for the Super Hornet and Growler fleets.
