UK cruise ships denied access to Argentine ports

The Argentine regional government in the port city of Ushuaia banned two British cruise ships from docking on 27 February, apparently because they had visited the disputed Falkland (Malvinas) Islands.

Cruise stopovers are a significant source of income for the local economy, and the Ushuaia chamber of tourism declared that the cruise industry should not be linked to the sovereignty dispute.

News of the ban emerged as Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner reiterated Argentina's claim to the natural resources of the Falklands, saying the issue was a "regional and global cause".
