By Denise Hammick While focused on "preventing potential terrorist activity", according to US Fifth Fleet spokesman Lieutenant-Commander Charlie Brown, the deployment of the USS Dwight D Eisenhower carrier strike group off the coast of Somalia will also ensure close air support to the region should the situation require it. Eisenhower arrived in the region "in the last couple of days" said Lt Cdr Brown, to accompany the Ticonderoga-class cruisers USS Bunker Hill and USS Anzio - which have been in the region for more than a week - and the Whidbey Island-class landing ship dock USS Ashland.
