Livermore wins warhead design contest

By Andrew Koch JDW Contributing Strategic Editor
Washington, DC

A programme to develop a replacement for US submarine-based nuclear warheads has moved forward with the selection of a design produced by the country's leading nuclear weapons laboratories, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) announced on 2 March.

If the design progresses to completion, the development would mark the first new nuclear weapon introduced into the US atomic stockpile in decades.

A team from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and Sandia National Laboratory will lead this effort called the Reliable Replacement Warhead-1 (RRW-1) which the NNSA claims will allow for safer, more secure weapons, while also providing greater reliability that could enable further reductions in Washington's nuclear weapon holdings.
