Putin declares Rosoboronexport Russia's sole defence export company

By Guy Anderson

Russian state defence export agency Rosoboronexport will once again have a monopoly on the country's foreign military sales following the signing of a presidential decree, it has emerged.

President Vladimir Putin's move - which marks the continued expansion of Rosoboronexport's influence in the field - effectively reverses a decree signed in September 2005, which gave some Russian companies the right to export military materiel.

Companies will be permitted to conclude existing agreements, but will not be able to negotiate new deals without deference to the state monopoly, the Kremlin information service announced. The agency has, to date, dominated Russia's defence exports. In 2005, it accounted for 85 per cent or USD5.207 billion of all hardware sold abroad.
