Naval force protection in an asymmetric world

Naval force protection in an asymmetric world

Reports of Moroccan police foiling an Al-Qaeda plot to attack US/UK warships in the Straits of Gibraltar have again brought the need for naval force protection against asymmetric threats sharply back into focus.

The Moroccan authorities reportedly arrested three Saudi nationals in May, claiming they had links to Al-Qaeda and planned to detonate explosives-laden dinghies alongside navy vessels in operations similar to the October 2000 attack on the destroyer USS Cole.

In a report published in its July/August issue, Jane's Navy International emphasises the critical need for force protection in modern naval operations in the light of emerging asymmetric threats.
