More than meets the eye

05 April 2002
More than meets the eye

By JNI reporter Philip Sen

With state-of-the-art sensors and concentration on high-tech signature management it is easy to forget the importance of visual stealth and camouflage. Philip Sen reports on some modern approaches to an age-old problem.

Total stealth covers all aspects of a ship's signature . . . If a vessel's stealth characteristics are such that sophisticated sensors can only detect it at very short ranges, its visual signature becomes paramount.

All-aspect stealth and signature management must be equally balanced across the board lest the vessel is seen by the 'Mark one eyeball' before it appears on the state-of-the-art radar screen.
