Installation of Mk.8 Mod 1 gun begins in Royal Navy frigates

By Richard Scott

The first two Mk.8 Mod 1 4.5in (114mm) medium-calibre gun mountings have been installed aboard the Royal Navy (RN) Type 23 frigate HMS Norfolk, and the Type 22 Batch 3 frigate HMS Cumberland.

The Mk.8 Mod 1 is an updated version of the Mk.8 Mod 0 gun mounting in service with the RN since the early 1970s.

The Weapons Division of BAE Systems RO Defence is the current custodian of the £30 million (US$43m) full-development, initial production and support contract, originally awarded to GEC-Marconi Land & Naval Systems in August 1998. The contract covers the supply of an initial eight gun systems, with a requirement to update a further 17.
