The Indian Navy's
'Bridges of Friendship' international fleet review, held in Mumbai
on 17 February to mark India's 50th anniversary as a republic, involved
almost 60 Indian Navy vessels along with two dozen foreign warships.

Commissioned
in 1987, the Kenyan
fast attack craft Nyayo is equipped with Otomat Mk 2 surface-to-surface
missiles, a 76mm medium-calibre gun, a twin 30mm mount and two
20mm guns.

Rarely
seen outside the Gulf, the Iranian
frigate Alvand was built by Vosper Thornycroft and commissioned
in 1971. Four launchers for Chinese-supplied C-802 anti-ship
missiles have been fitted towards the stern of the ship.

Two
further views of the Udaloy
class frigate Admiral Panteleyev. This ship, together with
sister vessel Admiral Vinogradov and a replenishment tanker,
conducted the Russian Pacific Fleet's first Indian Ocean deployment
for seven years.

Abhay is one of four Russian-built 'Pauk' class corvettes
acquired by India.

The
Project
15 guided missile destroyer INS Mysore. Built by Mazagon
docks in Mumbai, she and her sister ships INS Delhi and INS
Mumbai are the most powerful surface ships ever to serve with
the Indian Navy. Armament includes the SA-N-7 Urugan medium-range
surface-to-air missile system, and the SS-N-25 Uran anti-ship
missile system.

Transferred
from the UK in 1986, the aircraft carrier
INS Viraat (ex-HMS Hermes) has recently been refitted for
a further 10 years of active service.

Seen
from the air, the Project
16 frigate INS Ganga is based on a modified Leander hullform.
Its combat system mixes indigenous, Western and Russian equipment.

INS
Kirch is the latest Project 25A corvette to enter service.
Unlike earlier ships of the class it carries an Otobreda 76/62
Super Rapid gun and the Shikari fire control system. Its main
offensive punch comes in the form of 16 SS-N-25 Uran anti-ship
missiles.

The
marine
acoustic research ship INS Sagardhwani was built by Garden
Reach Shipbuilding & Engineering in Calcutta and was commissioned
in July 1994. Sagardhwani is used for acoustic and geological
research.

Brahmaputra is the first Project 16A frigate. She currently
lacks the new Trishul point defence missile system, the subject
of continuing development delays.
