Congress increases budget for joint US-Israeli defence projects

By Alon Ben-David JDW Correspondent

The US Congress has approved an allocation of USD600 million for joint Israeli-US defence projects and US military procurement from Israel in 2006.

Under the US Department of Defense (DoD) budget bill, passed on 22 December 2005, Congress appropriated USD133 million for continued development and production of the anti-ballistic missile Arrow Weapon System. Around USD63 million is allocated for additional development, mainly of the Arrow Block III interceptor, which was recently successfully tested in Israel.

The remainder was allotted for the Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI)/Boeing Arrow interceptor joint production programme.

"This will enable an increased production rate of interceptors," an industry source told JDW. "The appropriation can be considered as a show of trust in the Arrow project."
