The in-service date (ISD) for the UK Royal Navy's (RN's) new Type 45 anti-air warfare destroyer has slipped by a further seven months while programme costs have risen by GBP157 million (USD310.6 million) in the last year, according to information released by the National Audit Office (NAO).
Reviewing the progress of the Type 45 programme in its Ministry of Defence (MoD) Major Projects Report (MPR) 2006, the NAO says that the current forecast ISD for first-of-class HMS Daring has slipped from May 2009 to December 2009 over the last year. This is attributed to the impact of the slippage to the Sampson multifunction radar programme and revised timescale/risk analysis of the ship-trials programme leading to ISD.
The NAO report also reveals a GBP202 million increase in shipbuilding costs and associated capital charges. However, this growth has been partly offset by accounting adjustments and refinements totalling GBP45 million resulting from the transfer of programme deliverables to the Maritime Training Systems Integrated Project Team, and reduced in-year cash expenditure.
