Personnel and recruitment
Exact membership has always been difficult to determine. During the 1970s, there was considerable support for Baloch nationalism, and indeed a full-scale insurrection that was put down brutally by the army under the leadership of General Tikka Khan, 'The Butcher of Balochistan', as ordered by then prime minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. The BPLF claimed that during the early 1980s there were 3,000 Baloch fighters based in Afghanistan, 2,000 in the province and another 3,000 active in Sindh. Present-day antipathy towards the central government, fostered by feudal chieftains, is believed to be re-igniting interest in Balochi secessionism.
