Buk-M2 and M3 (Russian Federation), Self-propelled surface-to-air missiles

Type
Self-propelled surface-to-air missile system.

Development
The 9K40 Buk-M2 (NATO SA-17/'Grizzly') was developed and produced by the Tikhomirov Instrument Research Institute. The system is the evolutionary replacement system for the Buk-1 family (SA-11/'Gadfly') army level SAM and is similar in concept to that system.Known as the Buk-M2, the complete system, including radars and support equipment, is code named as Ural (a Russian river). The system completed development in 1990 at the Kapustin Yar Missile Test Range (KYMTR) and has not yet entered full series production, although it was formally accepted into service with the Russian Army during 1995, following troop acceptance trials during the early 1990s. Following reports in January 2008 by Colonel General Nikolai Frolov, Chief of the Army Air Defence Forces, the Buk-M2 will enter full service with the Russian Army in 2008, once further testing is complete. The Buk-M2 is designed to engage strategic and tactical aircraft, tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, tactical air-launched missiles, helicopters (including hovering targets), and RPV's at extremely low levels (around 10 m) up to 24,000 m altitude.Information deriving from Moscow during August 2007 suggests that the Buk-M2E variant can be integrated with independent parts of the S-300VM, a Buk-M3 is also known to exist.
