The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) has appointed Vice Admiral Michael Joseph Noonan as its new chief.
He takes over from Vice Adm Tim Barrett, who has led the service since July 2014. Vice Adm Noonan’s most recent appointment before assuming leadership of the RAN was as its deputy chief.
In his address at the handover ceremony on 6 July, Vice Adm Noonan indicated his intention for the service to be “capable of deploying nationally, regionally, and internationally in support of Australia’s national interests, during uncertain times”.
“To achieve these outcomes we need to think like a fighting navy, and fight like a thinking navy,” he added.
