Pyongyang threatens to cancel US-North Korean summit

Pyongyang has suspended high-level talks with Seoul over ongoing US-South Korean military exercises, and threatened to cancel a highly anticipated summit between North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump scheduled to take place on 12 June in Singapore.

On 16 May Pyongyang’s Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) described the latest edition of the ‘Max Thunder’ joint aerial exercise, which began on 11 May featuring some 100 aircraft, as “an undisguised challenge” to an agreement reached at the 27 April inter-Korean summit and as “a deliberate military provocation to the trend of the favourably developing situation on the Korean Peninsula”.
