First five Indian M777 howitzers to enter service in September

17 April 2018

The first five of 145 BAE Systems M777 155 mm/39-calibre lightweight howitzers that India ordered in November 2016 for USD737 million will be inducted into the Indian Army (IA) in September.

Three guns will join two others that arrived in India in May 2017 to undertake field firing trials at Pokhran in India’s western Rajasthan desert region to compile their ‘firing tables’ using Indian ammunition, BAE Systems confirmed to Jane’s on 17 April.

Thereafter, all five airmobile M777s will formally join an IA artillery regiment in September that is expected to launch its training phase with the howitzers, which will eventually be deployed along India’s disputed 4,057 km-long mountainous border with China.
