Two-carrier deal could save USN USD2 billion, lobby group says

If the US Navy (USN) and shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) can work out a mutually satisfying plan to include the USN’s next two carriers in one contract, the Pentagon could save billions of dollars, the chairman of a major naval contractors lobby group said.

“A two-ship aircraft carrier procurement plan will save more than USD2 billion over the construction of these ships, which currently are individually contracted on a five-year construction interval,” Rick Giannini, chairman of the Aircraft Carrier Industrial Base Coalition (ACIBC) and president and CEO of Milwaukee Valve Company in New Berlin, Wisconsin, said 22 March during a ACIBC forum to support a two-ship acquisition.
