Civilian deaths likely to spread violent protests in Ethiopia’s Oromia region, limited military incursions into Kenya probable

At least nine civilians were killed and 12 wounded by the Ethiopian military in Moyale, Oromia region, on 11 March, causing up to 50,000 civilians to cross the nearby border into Kenya, according to the town’s mayor.

Ethiopian state media reported that the soldiers, who were operating under the “Command Post” that oversees the ongoing state of emergency, acted based on a “mistaken intelligence report”, and that the military was pursuing Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) militants who had crossed into Ethiopia from Kenya.
