The US Department of State has approved a possible USD45 million Foreign Military Sale to Japan of 24 MK 15 Phalanx Close-in Weapon System (CIWS) Block IB Baseline 1 to MK 15 Phalanx Block IB Baseline 2 conversion kits, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced in a 2 March statement.
Included in the proposed deal, which still needs to be approved by the US Congress, are support equipment, spare parts, publications, software and associated support, logistical support services, and other related elements of logistical and programme support.
The DSCA said the proposed sale of conversion kits for the naval CIWS “will improve Japan's capability in current and future defensive efforts,” with the country set to use the enhanced capability as a "deterrent to regional threats and to strengthen homeland defence”.
