US Army seeks Next Generation Squad Automatic Rifle prototypes

02 March 2018

The US Army has released a Prototype Opportunity Notice (PON) for its Next Generation Squad Automatic Rifle (NGSAR) as it considers replacing the 5.56 mm M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW).

Published on 1 March, the PON said the army intends to award up to five contracts for the design of prototype solutions, aiming to develop system demonstrators at technology readiness level (TRL) 6.

The PON said the NGSAR will “combine the firepower and range of a machine gun with the precision and ergonomics of a rifle, yielding capability improvements in accuracy, range, and lethality”. It did not indicate what calibre the weapon might be.
