Recent armed robberies indicative of growing violent crimes in Ghana, Accra and Tema-based financial institutions likely targets

02 March 2018

Two armed robberies took place in Accra and Tema in the Greater Accra region on 27 and 28 February, with at least one person being murdered, local media reports state.

On 27 February, four armed men entered a car dealership during business hours in the North Industrial Area of Accra. The robbers fired their weapons, held two people hostage, and stole both cash and CCTV equipment. The next day, a Lebanese man was shot dead by armed robbers after withdrawing money from a bank in the Tema Industrial Area. The two robbery incidents follow an increasing trend of robberies targeting financial institutions and mobile money vendors, car thefts, and opportunistic snatch-and-grab street crimes in crowded areas, entertainment venues, and vehicular traffic, especially in Accra and other larger cities such as Tema, Kumasi, and Takoradi.
