North Korea prepares to upgrade second Najin-class guided missile frigate

01 March 2018

Analysis of commercial satellite imagery suggests that the Korean People’s Navy (KPN) is preparing to upgrade its second Najin-class guided-missile frigate (FFG).

Captured on 19 February the imagery shows the 102 m long FFG (with pennant number 531), which is operated by the KPN’s East Sea Fleet, berthed alongside at mole No 1 in the North Korean port city of Najin after being moved from its home port at Toejo-dong during the last week of May 2016.

While there are indications that minor preparatory work has taken place in recent months, the KPN appears to be waiting for the upgrade programme to commence in the nearby No 28 Shipyard in Najin, where the vessel was originally completed in 1975.
