US Army defensive laser programmes gradually advance

28 February 2018

The US Army believes it is “getting awful close” to using high-energy laser (HEL) technology for air defence, Richard DeFatta, director of the Future Warfare Center at Army Space and Missile Defense Command, said during 28 February remarks at the Association of the US Army.

“We’re not quite there yet, but we’re back on the right vehicle and we’re not on the HEMTT [Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck] anymore,” DeFatta said.

Instead, the army is integrating a laser on its slightly smaller Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles for a HEL Tactical Vehicle Demonstrator (TVD). The HEL TVD is to eventually showcase a 100 kW laser that could be used on the army’s Indirect Fire Protection Capability Increment 2 - Intercept Block I (IFPC Inc 2-I).
