Reshuffled military prevents forced removal of Sudanese president, payment delays likely to persist despite improved Gulf-creditor relations

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on 27 February replaced the army, air force, and navy chiefs of staff.

Notably, Lieutenant-General Kamal Abdul Maaruf replaced Lt-Gen Imad Al-Din Adawi of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), who had served since February 2016. This is the seventh military reshuffle since the government prevented an attempted mutiny by SAF officers in November 2012 that intended to remove Bashir by force.
