On 11 February, the Islamic State’s province in Egypt’s North Sinai – Wilayat Sinai – released a video of its operations against the Egyptian army.
The video featured a warning to Egyptians not to take part in the presidential election, scheduled to take place on 26–28 March.
On 9 February, the Egyptian Armed Forces announced Comprehensive Operation Sinai 2018 – a counter-terrorism operation across Egypt from the Western Desert to the Sinai Peninsula – with the objective of “eliminating terrorism” in Egypt within a three-month deadline set by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on 30 November, in response to the Al Rawdah mosque attack on 24 November.
