The fiscal year (FY) 2019 spending plan for the US Navy (USN) underscores changes and improvements the USN has in mind for its surface ship fleet.
Released on 12 February, the spending plan includes USD5.6 billion for three guided-missile DDG 51 destroyers as part of the multiyear procurement. The destroyers will be Flight III ships equipped with the air and missile defence radar (AMDR) and are part of the FY 2018 10-ship multiyear procurement.
With the AMDR, the ships will be better equipped to conduct ballistic-missile defence (BMD) missions.
“The navy continues to invest in capabilities to counter improved ballistic missile capabilities emerging worldwide,” the USN said in budget documentation.
