Along with its proposed fiscal year (FY) 2019 budget, the US Navy (USN) also submitted to Congress its legally mandated 30-year shipbuilding plan that shows the navy reaching its 355-ship fleet by the 2050s, with aggressive programmatic options to achieve that goal decades sooner.
The plan details a path for reaching the 355-ship “battle force” just “beyond 2050, “but also frames options for potentially accelerating to the 2030s with additional resources, service life extensions, and strong industry response”, according to the plan released on 12 February with the proposed budget.
The USN has dubbed the 355-ship plan the “navy the nation needs” (NNN).
