The US Army in fiscal year (FY) 2019 has requested USD418.8 million for the Paladin M109A7 self-propelled howitzer (SPH) programme, and would buy 36 of the mobile howitzers, according to budget documents released on 12 February.
The US Army in FY 2018 had requested funding to finalise the M109A7’s engineering and manufacturing development phase and begin full-rate production by buying 71 systems. However, a full appropriation for FY 2018 has not yet passed in Congress and the platform struggled during official testing.
Initial testing in October 2016 found that fumes were released in the SPH cab and testing was suspended, according to the Director of Operational Test and Evaluation's (DOT&E's) 2017 annual report.
