Two more Gepard frigates enter service with Vietnamese navy, says report

08 February 2018

Two more Russian-built Modified Gepard 3.9 (Project 11661E)-class guided-missile frigates have entered service with the People’s Army of Vietnam Navy (PAVN), according to a report by Russian news agency TASS, bringing the number of such frigates operated by the service to four.

“The moment the new combat ships entered combat duty heralded a major phase in upgrading the Vietnamese Navy, enhancing its combat capability, and making a decisive contribution to strengthening the protection of the country’s maritime borders,” Rear Admiral Pham Van Hoanh, the commander of PAVN’s 4th Regional Command, was quoted by the media outlet as saying on 6 February following a commissioning ceremony held at the Cam Ranh Bay naval base.
