China’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) has criticised the US government’s recently published Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) for “playing up” the threat posed by China’s nuclear weapon programme.
"China has always adopted a restrained attitude towards the development of nuclear weapons and kept its nuclear forces at the minimum level required for national security," MND spokesman Ren Guoqiang said in a statement on 4 February.
"China remains firmly committed to the principle of ‘no first use’ of nuclear weapons under any circumstance. It unconditionally does not use or threaten the use of nuclear weapons against non-nuclear weapon states or nuclear weapon-free zones," Ren added.
