Jihadist militants attacked a Nigerien National Guard position near Chetimari in the Diffa region on the southeastern border with Nigeria, killing two soldiers, on 29 January.
The previous week, jihadists of Jamaat Ahl al-Sunnah li-Dawa wal-Jihad (widely known as Boko Haram) attacked a Nigerien military post in Toumour in the Diffa region, killing seven soldiers. The militants used Nigerian army vehicles to conceal their approach, causing confusion and many Nigerien soldiers to flee their positions during the attack, resulting in the seizure of 10 military vehicles and ammunition by the jihadists.
