Belgium's Council of Ministers on 26 January approved the acquisition of six new mine countermeasures (MCM) vessels for EUR1.1 billion (USD1.38 billion), Belgian Defence reported on its website on 29 January.
The procurement will be conducted together with the Netherlands, which is also acquiring six MCM vessels, under Belgium’s lead.
The MCM vessels will be equipped with unmanned surface and underwater vehicles to find and destroy mines.
The vessels will replace Belgium's five Tripartite-class minehunters and Godetia support ship.
