A desire to retain sovereignty over European engineering is apparent across a number of domains in the military sphere, not least in the development of unmanned vehicles.
With the United States and Israel continuing to pioneer in the sale of their systems to European nations, indigenous industry and their government counterparts have launched a number of initiatives over recent years in an attempt to keep engineering know how on the continent, with less reliance on the import of off-the-shelf technology from other countries.
The most recent exploration into this is the launch of the European Defence Fund’s Ocean2020 initiative, issued by the European Union under the Preparatory Action on Defence Research programme.
