Russian media have shown videos of a fire on board a submarine of the 19th Submarine Brigade in Ulysses Bay, Vladivostok, on 21 January. Shot from different angles, the videos show bright orange flames accompanied by volumes of thick black smoke billowing across the open water.
The head of Russia’s Pacific Fleet press service, Captain Nikolai Voskresensky, claimed there had been an exercise: “The fire brigades carried out a rapid intervention, using simulation; there was controlled combustion,” he said. Firefighters extinguished the fire in six minutes, he added.
The Ministry of Defence was then reported as stating that in the exercise a pyrotechnic or spark had been ignited on the forward bow.
