Russian defence minister confirms second S-400 in Syria

24 January 2018

Russia now has two S-400 long-range air defence systems protecting its bases in Syria, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu told journalists during a visit to Vietnam on 22 January.

Russia publicised the deployment of the first S-400 at its Humaymim Air Base in November 2015, but has not previously announced the deployment of a second.

Satellite imagery shows that a second long-range system was set up at an existing Syrian air defence site in the coastal mountain range northwest of Masyaf between April and 17 July 2017.

The Russian television news outlet RT released footage on 23 January showing S-400 components being unloaded from an An-124 transport aircraft at Humaymim and from the Ropucha-class landing ship Yamal (156) at Tartus port.
