Taliban militants kill at least 18 people in Afghanistan's Kabul

AT LEAST 18 people - including at least six Ukrainian and two Venezuelan nationals working for Kam Air airline and six other foreign nationals - were killed during an attack on the Intercontinental Hotel in Afghanistan's capital Kabul on 20 January, Reuters reported. The attackers - reportedly wearing military uniforms and armed with AK-series assault rifles - opened fire on people at the hotel. Security forces subsequently assaulted the hotel, killing the three attackers and freeing 160 guests. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, while the Ministry of the Interior blamed the Haqqani Network.
